Study Room for Photographs

The collection of the Department of Photographs contains approximately seventy-five thousand photographs spanning the entire history of the medium, including five hundred photographically illustrated books and albums. Throughout the year a rotating selection of objects from the collection is displayed in the Museum's Robert Wood Johnson Jr. Gallery (gallery 850). Collection objects are also featured in exhibitions in the Howard Gilman Gallery, the Joyce and Robert Menschel Hall for Modern Photography, and the special exhibition galleries for Drawings, Prints, and Photographs (gallery 691, gallery 692, and gallery 693).

Most works not currently on view may be examined in the Study Room for Photographs, including materials from the Walker Evans Archive. The Study Room is accessible to qualified researchers by appointment and with proper identification. Before making an appointment, visitors are encouraged to consult the Collection online to explore the department's holdings.

Appointments must be requested a minimum of two weeks in advance, and are subject to availability. Space in the Study Room is limited.
