As a young man, Lan Ying traveled from his native Hangzhou to study with a group of ambitious painters in Songjiang, near Shanghai. These artists (whose work also appears in the following galleries) used their excellent collections of old paintings to fuel their progressive practice, mining the past in search of inspiration for the present. Lan learned to do so as well; this album, in which the artist explores a different old master’s style in each leaf, is a perfect expression of this movement. Back in Hangzhou, Lan taught his own students, including his son, Lan Meng.
