On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 210

This handscroll brings together paintings of horses and grooms by three generations of the same family. The first is by the early-Yuan-dynasty artist Zhao Mengfu, the second by his son Zhao Yong, and the third by his grandson Zhao Lin. Zhao Mengfu was one of the great painters of his day, and his skill in painting horses was particularly admired. When his son and grandson were shown Zhao’s painting by a collector more than fifty years after its creation, they added their own horses and grooms to create this record of artistic lineage.
